Name & Pronoun Change at UCSB

At UCSB, you must change your name in multiple locations in order to keep your name consistent. It is possible to have your chosen/preferred name on GOLD, Student Health Services, your Access Card, Umail, and NetID, regardless of your legal name. Here are the steps to change your name in each system, if you have NOT legally changed your name.

  1. Log in to GOLD with your NetID and password
  2. Click on “About Me”
  3. Click on “Personal Information”
  4. Click on “Preferred Name”
  5. Click on the “Directory Services Directory Editor” link
  6. In the new tab pop-up log in with your NetID and password
  7. Click on Edit “Your Name” profile
  8. Fill out preferred first name
  9. Click “Update Profile” on the bottom of the screen

** If you change your name mid-term, it might not be reflected on the class roster which were most likely printed in the beginning of the quarter. It is encouraged that you talk to your instructors about your new name change so they can reflect it on the class roster.

You can adjust your display name and add pronouns by logging into zoom, clicking your portrait in the top right corner (or the default picture if you haven't added one yet) and then click profile.

You can put your pronouns in parentheses after your first name but you could also put them after your last name if you prefer. In Zoom chat, my name will display as Kai (they/them) Sanders. If you do the last name it will appear Kai Sanders (they/them). Either way is fine!

If you are teaching a class that just shifted to zoom, please add your own pronouns and let your students know how they can update their name and pronoun (even before your first class session if possible).
