Health Equity Advocate Post

Health Equity Advocate

The Health Equity Advocate position originally emerged out of student demand and organization in 2017 in response to years of inaccessible and transphobic healthcare on campus. Since then, this role has worked to improve education on health equity and LGBTQ+ healthcare needs, leading to significant improvement in gender care on campus. The Health Equity Advocate works closely with the Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity (RCSGD), Student Health Services (SHS), and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to promote equitable healthcare policy, address student feedback, and continually update healthcare systems to improve ease of access and student experience.

UCSB’s Health Equity Advocate, Buster Buchanan (he/him), is available to help students access and navigate healthcare both on and off campus. He can answer questions and provide guidance regarding gender transition, queer and trans healthcare, health insurance, health discrimination, Student Health Services, health-related activism, and the general wellbeing of students experiencing health inequities. If you are experiencing any difficulties or concerns in obtaining proper care, have questions about healthcare options, or want to suggest possible areas of action in the name of health equity, please reach out to Buster!
